Ear Wax

Ear wax is a natural substance produced by your ears to protect and maintain ear health. It helps to trap dust, dirt and potentially harmful bacteria, preventing them from reaching the delicate inner parts of your ear and reducing the risk of infection. Some people can experience excessive ear wax, which may cause:

  • Discomfort and sometimes pain
  • Hearing problems
  • Itching
  • Tinnitus
  • Dizziness
  • A feeling of fullness
  • Hearing aids to underperform

In these cases, it is advisable to seek ear wax removal from a qualified professional.

Irrigation

A gentle and effective method of ear wax removal that uses a controlled flow of warm water to flush the ear canal. The water helps to soften and loosen the wax, allowing it to be safely dislodged and removed.

This technique is carried out using specialised equipment designed to regulate water pressure, ensuring the procedure is both safe and comfortable. Irrigation is a commonly used method and is suitable for many patients when clinically appropriate.

Micro Suction

A safe and precise method of ear wax removal that uses a gentle suction device to clear wax from the ear canal. The procedure is carried out using magnification, allowing clear vision inside the ear at all times.

Micro suction is a clean and controlled technique using a thin sterile tube to gently remove wax. This method is particularly suitable for people with sensitive ears or for those who cannot undergo irrigation.

FAQ

anything

Many patients may not have experienced professional ear wax removal before and therefore have questions regarding the procedure. If you do not find the answer to your query below, please feel free to contact us.

During your appointment, the clinician will first discuss any questions you may have regarding the consent form. You will be asked to read and sign this prior to treatment. A pre-microsuction questionnaire will also need to be completed. Both ears will then be examined using a video otoscope, allowing us to create a digital record of the ear canals before and after treatment. This also allows us to assess the health of the outer ear and ear canal. If ear wax is present, the procedure will be fully explained and ear wax removal will be carried out if it is safe and appropriate to do so.Once the procedure is complete, a final examination will be carried out and the results will be discussed with you.

Appointments can take up to 30 minutes depending on the amount of wax present, how soft or compacted it is, and whether one or both ears require treatment.

Yes, we recommend that patients soften the wax using an olive oil spray (such as Earol) twice a day for a few days prior to the appointment. This helps make the procedure safer, quicker, and more comfortable.

It is normal for hearing to feel slightly worse or more blocked during this time as the wax softens.

In some cases, it may not be possible or safe to remove all of the wax in one appointment. This may be due to the wax being too hard, tightly packed, or positioned too close to the eardrum.

If this happens, we will advise you on the next steps and a follow-up appointment may be required. In many cases, the second appointment is carried out free of charge.

If no wax is found, a full ear health check will be carried out. This includes examination of the outer ear, ear canal, and eardrum.

The consultation fee of £25 applies in this case. You will also receive advice, reassurance, and recommendations if needed.

Video otoscopy may be used to record findings, and if any signs of infection or inflammation are identified, you will be advised on the next steps, which may include referral to a GP or pharmacist.

We kindly ask that cancellations are made at least 24 hours in advance by phone, email, or text so the appointment can be offered to another patient

Microsuction should not be painful. However, if you experience any discomfort during the procedure, it is important that you inform the clinician immediately.

As with any medical procedure, there are some potential risks. These will be explained in detail before treatment and outlined in the consent form.

Possible risks include:

  • Infection
  • Temporary dizziness or vertigo
  • Minor abrasion of the ear canal
  • Triggering or worsening tinnitus
  • Temporary cough reflex

If you experience pain, swelling, discharge, changes in hearing, or balance issues after treatment, you should consult your GP as soon as possible. We also ask that you inform Swindon Ear Clinic.

This varies from person to person. Some individuals may never need ear wax removal, while others may benefit from regular checks, particularly those who are prone to wax build-up or wear hearing aids.
